I-Corps alum Burlington Bio, a biotech startup spun out of the University of Vermont, was recently awarded a $305,000 Phase I SBIR grant from the NSF. The funding will accelerate the development of the company’s AlgiWhey technology, a novel whey protein–based platform engineered for scalable, sustainable food and biotechnology applications. This new award will support the company in translating lab-scale research into practical solutions that improve food functionality, workforce development, and environmental impacts.
“This SBIR award from NSF validates both the science and the commercial potential of our platform,” said founder and CEO Rachael Floreani, Ph.D. “Our technology allows manufacturers to scale production and supports the innovation required to meet global protein needs.”
